The Division of Geriatrics

The Division of Geriatrics includes three units of distinct function:
Acute Geriatric Department: 38 beds. This department treats inpatients with severe illnesses, the majority referred directly from the Department of Emergency Medicine, including patients on respirators. In most cases, these patients suffer from a functional disorder, at times declining cognitive abilities and a large number of background diseases in addition to the acute current ailment. Most patients hospitalized from their home will return to it when discharged. We maintain ongoing comtact with the patient’s family members and the appropriate service providers in the community.
Rehabilitation Unit: 10 beds. The patients hospitalized in the unit usually arrive at the department as a result of one of the following events:
1. A stroke.
2. After having broken a hip.
3. Rehabilitation following an illness accompanied by functional impairment.
The period of hospitalization in rehabilitation at Shaare Zedek is 16 days – the shortest in Israel, with significant improvement in functionality.
Nursing Unit: 14 beds. Most of the inpatients in the unit are in need of complex nursing services or are in conditions defined as sub-acute.
Academic Activity
The department takes part in teaching in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, is recognized for full internship in Geriatrics and partial internship in Internal Medicine. The department doctors participate actively in teaching in the Geriatric Institute, adjacent to the department.
The department staff take part in a variety of research projects, with an average of 6 publications per year and 8-10 presentations in professional conferences.
