The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Center treats children from birth to age 18 for various severe conditions. We treat a wide variety of acute diseases such as complicated infections (sepsis), respiratory difficulties requiring resuscitation, congenital deformations, and children who require special care following various operations and diagnostic and therapeutic catheterizations.
Additional children treated at the unit are those suffering from renal failure who require preliminary stabilization, including closely monitored dialysis. We also receive children who have been injured as the result of accidents, terrorist attacks, burns and other emergencies, as well as children suffering from severe chronic illnesses who need special treatment that requires unique supervision.
The Pediatric Intensive Care team is on permanent call, 24/7, for resuscitation of children at the hospital. The unit also carries out procedures requiring sedation for pain such as diagnostic and therapeutic brochoscopies, bone marrow biopsies, insertion and removal of long-term catheters. This service is offered to all hospitalized children as well as to out-patients.
The Team
Unit doctors include specialists in pediatric intensive care medicine and pediatric medicine as well as interns in pediatric medicine. The nursing team includes nurses who specialize in pediatric intensive care. Our social worker specializes in stressful situations, supporting the child and family through all aspects of the special needs during hospitalization.
The teamwork, ongoing updates and cooperation among all staff members benefit the patients and their families.
