Areas of Activity
The job of the pathologist is complex and diverse. One of the most important tasks is to diagnose disease by examining biopsies, which are tissue samples excised from the patient. There is a wide spectrum of diseases encountered including benign and malignant tumors and a vast array of other diseases. The exact and accurate diagnosis is essential and critical in the future care and treatment of the patient.
The Pathology Institute of the Shaare Zedek Medical Center is comprised of a Department of Pathology (Dr. C. Reinus, Acting Director and Dr. G. Lijovetzky, senior physician) and a Cytology Unit (Dr. S. Gotshlack-Sabag, Unit Director and Dr. T. Glick, senior physician)
The overall process of diagnosis involves the following procedure:
1.The biopsies are received and examined macroscopically by the Institute resident pathologists Dr. E. Golomb and Dr. E. Barbarstein.
2. The preparation of the histological sections and cytological smears for microscopic examination, including histochemical and immunohistochemical staining. This is performed by the technical staff.
3. Microscopic examination and diagnosis of the disease by the Institute's senior pathologists.
