Clinical activity:
Our unit cares for children with problems in the fields of Hematology and Oncology or with Hematological and Oncological diseases.
The activities of the unit include the treatment of a wide range of diseases of the Blood, both common and rare, and other malignant pediatric diseases.
The Hematology service includes:
Diagnosis and treatment of pediatric diseases of Blood, in particular:
* All types of Anemia- Iron deficiency, Thalassemia, Hemolytic Anemia.
* Low White Blood Cell Count (congenital and acquired).
* Coagulation disorders, including low platelet count (Thrombocytopenia) and platelet malfunction; congenital and acquired
* Clotting factor disorders causing both hyper- and hypo-coagulability
* Disorders of Bone Marrow function.
* Performance of special blood tests and bone marrow examination.
* Infusion of Blood products and drugs requiring intravenous access.
* Coordination of treatment for children with both hematologic disorders and other diseases.
The Oncology service includes:
* Diagnosis of malignant disease
* Chemotherapy treatment and coordination of Surgery and Radiotherapy
* Treatment with Blood products
* Long term follow up of children and adolescents after recovery from malignant disease- checking for signs of recurrence, monitoring long term side effects of disease and treatment.
* Collaboration with other leading units in the country
The Service is given in the following frameworks:
Outpatient clinics- children referred from the community for diagnosis and treatment
Pediatric day hospital- for more complex treatment in an ambulatory setting, such as blood product transfusions, chemotherapy, intravenous drugs and bone marrow aspiration and analysis.
Inpatients - in both the Pediatric and Pediatric-Surgery wards for examinations and complex treatments requiring hospitalization.
Consultations - as requested by both the Pediatric wards and other units of the hospital: Emergency room, neonatal and premature infants, Intensive care, Gastroenterology, Neurology, ENT etc.
Academic activity
* Teaching of medical students - the unit staff takes part in the teaching curriculum of medical students from Ben Gurion University of the Negev, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Columbia University program at Ben Gurion. Teaching includes both frontal lectures, guidance in the preparation of seminars and presenting patients in clinical rounds.
* Teaching of nursing students - the unit provides a course in pediatric hemato-oncology (both lectures and patient presentations) for nursing students at Shaare Zedek's nursing school.
