Shaare Zedek Medical Center, celebrating 108 years of medical excellence in Jerusalem, is known for its professional, conscientious nursing, dating back to the יpoque of Schwester Selma, the legendary first Head Nurse of Shaare Zedek.
Approximately 750 nursing personnel are currently on staff, about 700 of them accredited nurses with varying degrees of certification: practical nurses, registered nurses, and nurses with academic degrees; about half our nurses have undergone specialized training in specific medical areas, including: operating room, trauma, oncology, intensive care, obstetrics, nephrology, and prevention of infection.
The nursing management team members are partners is policy making at Shaare Zedek. Professionalism and openmindedness alongside deep respect for and inspiration derived of Jewish tradition are guiding principles. We operate with the utmost respect towards our patients and their family members, adapting the treatment to the needs of each individual.
The nursing staff invests great effort in continuously updating their knowledge and honing their skills to meet the ever-changing needs and technologies, in order to meet the professional, social and economic challenges faced by health service providers.
The nursing staff is an integral part of the team planning upcoming structural changes and development projects, including: the Weinstock Family Department of Emergency Medicine, launched in 2004, which immediately became utilized to its fullest; the new Operating and Recovery Rooms project, whose building is beginning; the new, comprehensive Children’s Hospital scheduled to be built soon; and the new Maternity Ward and Delivery Room, a development project to be launched in the near future.
The nursing staff is responsible for developing the area of patient instruction in a wide variety of areas, ranging from pre-operation to pre-discharge of mother and newborn; nursing, natural birth, geriatric discharge into senior homes and the community, computerization and much more.
The Shaare Zedek Nursing Credo
Nursing is a combination of humaneness, knowledge and professionalism in all therapeutic settings within the hospital and leading up to discharge into the community.
The nurse’s role is to assist the patient in attaining optimal health alongside emotional, physical, social and spiritual wellbeing; furthermore, the nurse provides support in difficult moments and towards the end of life.
The Nursing service operates according to ethical standards, legal directives and deriving of the assumption that all people have the right to receive health services and optimal care. From this standpoint, the Nursing services enable each patient to take an active part in the therapeutic process and in decision making regarding the patient’s care, all the while maintaining human dignity and professional quality of service.
Areas of Responsibility and Operation
1. Devising of nursing policy regarding working methods according to Hospital management policy and professional standards of the Ministry of Health, and the assimilation of that policy among the entire hospital nursing staff.
2. Recruitment, placement, in-service training and monitoring of nursing staff and para-medical staff.
3. Ongoing professional development, according to changing needs and national and local trends.
4. Processes of monitoring, quality assurance, encouragement of reporting on problems and lesson-learning at individual as well as system-wide levels.
5. Preparedness for emergency and meeting of standards according to Ministry of Health and IDF directives.
6. Computerization within the Nursing services.
