In Memoriam: Emunah Hasin
In the presence of hundreds of family and friends, Emunah Hasin, a long-time member of the Shaare Zedek community and the hospital’s Director of External Relations for the past decade, was laid to rest in Jerusalem on Monday. Emunah died following a lengthy bout with cancer.
In years past, she had survived three additional rounds of cancer and various other serious health complications. Never one to be shy or reserved about anything, Emunah would always proudly use her difficult experiences to inspire other cancer victims and tell them that they too could persevere.
A nurse by profession, Emunah had been with Shaare Zedek for over 30 years, first in the Department of Nursing and for the past decade with the Department of Public Relations.
As anyone who ever met her quickly learned, Emunah was the ultimate “people’s person.” With an infectious laugh and a heavy Boston accent that defined her even long after her arrival in Israel, Emunah relished the chance to be around others and discuss her passions- Israel, her family and perhaps most of all Shaare Zedek.
Despite being deeply entrenched in Israeli society with an Israeli husband and children, one of Emunah’s many qualities was that she never lost the American in her. She welcomed jokes surrounding her less than stellar Hebrew, and used her New England charm to quickly endear herself to whoever she met. From the maintenance staff to some of the hospital’s most generous and established financial supporters, everyone knew and loved Emunah.
While her specific role in recent years was within the Public Relations Department, Emunah was never defined or limited by titles. Each and every day she would arrive committed to discovering exactly what she could do to make the hospital a better place. The Wilf Woman and Infant Center on the hospital’s Ninth Floor was her “baby” and almost every aspect of its development could be linked back to Emunah’s creativity and dedication. She took great pride in seeing that Department grow rapidly and every new birth in the Department filled her with a sense of joy.
In an environment never short of its tension and internal politics, Emunah always found a way to rise above it all. It was nearly impossible not to find yourself in fits of laughter at some point during a conversation with Emunah. Yet, as much as she was about humor and joy, she was always a person of action and substance. Countless projects succeeded only because of her drive and tenacious commitment to make them happen.
Beneath a blazing Jerusalem sun, her funeral served as a fitting testimony to her life. She was eulogized by many close friends and loved ones including her husband, her sister and her two sons.
Professor Jonathan Halevy, Shaare Zedek’s Director General, said that Emunah’s association with the hospital will be a large part of her eternal legacy and thanked her for her decades of hard work. He said the love that Shaare Zedek felt for her could be felt through the many hospital employees in attendance.
Uri Schwarz, Director of International Operations at Shaare Zedek, who worked directly alongside Emunah as was one of her closest associates at the hospital, offered the final eulogy of the day describing her truly unique qualities and as a role model that no one would ever forget.
Emunah Hasin leaves behind her mother, a brother and sister, her husband Gaby, two sons and daughters in law and two grandsons.
