The Oncology Institute is responsible for all areas of oncology for adult patients at Shaare Zedek, treating all types of cancerous diseases except for those that harm the blood and lymph systems, treated by the Hematology Department.
 
The Institute treats patients in all of the following stages:

Diagnosis
Devising the patient’s care plan
Administration of medicinal treatment including chemotherapy, hormonal and biological drugs
Supportive care, alleviating patients’ side effects
Palliative care and support of patients with advanced-stage diseases

The Institute initiates many clinical studies inspired by – and meant for - Shaare Zedek patients
The Experimental Oncology Laboratory operates under the auspices of the Institute. At the Laboratory, innovative treatments for cancer are being developed.
 
The Oncology Institute includes 6 units:

Oncology Day Hospitalization

The Oncology Day Hospital is the Institute’s center of activity at which the offices and doctors rooms are located. It is here that blood tests are conducted, chemotherapy treatments are administered as well as blood infusions, other liquid infusions and additional treatments.  
 
The Day Hospital additionally admits urgent cases and begins treatment in cases of medical complications.
 
Hemato-Oncology Inpatient Department

The department features 22 beds, serving oncology and hematology patients, providing for investigation of complicated cases, provision of palliative care, extensive chemical treatment and intensive nursing care.

New patients arriving from the community are referred to the Outpatient Clinics for primary counseling. Patients undergoing follow-up by Oncologists are also treated here.

Oncology Pain and Palliative Care Unit

The Unit treats Oncology patients and other patients experiencing complex chronic pain without an oncological diagnosis but in need of intensive medicinal treatment for pain.
The Unit operates in all three frameworks: Day Hospitalization, the Hemato-Oncology Inpatient Department and the Outpatient Clinics.

The Unit coordinates multi-center, international clinical studies as well as local clinical studies. Areas of research include breast cancer (primary and metastsis).

Institute Activities
The Institute conducts routine consultations with hospital departments to provide the patients with advanced, multi-disciplinary care, as is accepted practice in treatment of cancerous diseases.
The Institute conducts weekly meetings with oncology surgeons, on breast cancer and intestinal tumors, as well as gyno-oncology and urology meetings.  
 
Teaching Activities
* Institute staff takes part in teaching medical students from Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Ben Gurion University of the Negev and through clinical rounds.
* Interns in Internal Medicine carry out their elective training in the Oncology Department for a period of three months.
* The Department is recognized for fulfillment of part of the Oncology internship.
* Department staff members participate in teaching a specialized Oncology course for nurses.
