Remarkable Art Exhibit Dedicated for Emergency Department Lobby
Visitors to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center are now being treated to a remarkable new artistic exhibition lining the walls adjacent to the Weinstock Department of Emergency Medicine on the Fanya Gottesfeld Heller Floor.

The exhibit features the Aliyah series by renowned artist Salvador Dali, which was produced on the occasion of Israel’s twentieth anniversary. The suite of dramatic paintings feature key moments in the development of the Zionist enterprise. Included are works picturing scenes from the War of Independence, the Wailing Wall and other known symbols from across the Holy Land.

The images are both inspiring and haunting, and include recognition of the chronological connection between the rebirth of a modern State of Israel and the Holocaust. The exhibit was made possible through the generosity of Francine Gani of Palo Alto who donated the lithographs from her personal connection.

Francine, whose association with Shaare Zedek began with the local American Committee for Shaare Zedek in California has become one of the hospital’s closest friends and supporters in recent years and welcomed the chance to show this additional expression of solidarity with the hospital. The exhibit had been part of her private art collection for some years and she thought that a major medical facility in Israel’s capital would be the perfect home for this remarkable display depicting Israel’s modern experience.

The architectural layer of the hall where the exhibit is now a permanent feature lends its self perfectly to such a collection. Both spacious and well lit, visitors eyes are immediately drawn to the lithographs now lining the wall.
At the official dedication of the exhibit held recently, Ms. Gani expressed great satisfaction at how the exhibit had literally transformed the Emergency Department lobby. She was pleased to recognize that the exhibit is the only major art exhibition in Jerusalem that is open 24 hours a day, literally every day of the year. Patients and family members are able to come and let their minds wander away from sickness and pain as they review the works.

Professor Jonathan Halevy, Shaare Zedek’s Director General saluted Ms. Gani’s generosity saying that while the hospital has many philanthropic supporters, Francine distinguishes herself as someone who is truly committed to every aspect of Shaare Zedek’s well-being. “This exhibit is a reminder both of Israel’s special history and the passion and sacrifice which defines Zionism but it also displays the remarkable sense of friendship that Francine feels for our hospital and the people of Jerusalem and Israel.”

In recent months, Francine has made special efforts to even more firmly demonstrate her love for Israel by committing herself to learning Hebrew fluently. Via an online tutor, Francine has quickly learned the language and demonstrates a high degree of Hebrew fluency.
