With the introduction of the new Wohl Surgical Operating Complex at Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center, the hospital has become firmly positioned as one of Israel’s leaders in surgical medicine. Even while the vast experience of Shaare Zedek’s surgeons has come to aid the peopleof Jerusalem and Israel, through an innovative new program, patients far beyond Israel’s borders shall now benefit from it.
The program is being spearheaded by Professor Petachia Reissman, Director of General Surgery at Shaare Zedek and a world recognized expert in laparoscopic procedures. The initiative will see Professor Reissman working alongside some of the world’s leading medical facilities via live video broadcasts sent from Shaare Zedek’s operating theaters to surgical colleagues around the world. Participating with Shaare Zedek are renowned hospitals in the US including the Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, NYU Medical Center, Mt. Sinai N.Y, among many others.
The forum will enable the surgeons to confer via video conference on complex cases and use their mutual experiences in the operating room for the benefit of their patients on different sides of the globe. A recent case, performed by Professor Reissman and highlighted in the online forum focused on a patient who was suffering from a particularly complex intestinal blockage. The Shaare Zedek team, led by Professor Reissman addressed the patient’s condition using a specific laparoscopic approach, which the hospital has become increasingly recognized as a leader in.
In the follow-up conversation with the American surgeons, they all expressed how impressed they were with how Shaare Zedek dealt with such complex cases, the intricate nature of the procedure used as well as the outcomes. The program, which is designed to convene at least once a month, is intended to promote a sense of mutual cooperation among leading surgeons and allow them to learn from their colleagues' experiences.
The inclusion of advanced video recording abilities within the new Wohl Surgical Operating Complex, along with internet broadcasting capabilities which were designed by the hospital’s Information Technology Department, have enabled Shaare Zedek to become an active member in this prestigious forum.
According to Professor Reissman, “The fact that Shaare Zedek was chosen to be included in this program, is an important mark of distinction that places our surgery department on par with those in some of America’s most distinguished and accomplished medical centers.”
