Jeru
salem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center got into the holiday (high holiday that is…) spirit a little early this year with a performance by a Swiss alphorn band. The alphorn is a traditional horn associated with the Swiss Alps. Some eight feet long its low booming sounds remind many of the shofar blown on Rosh Hashana.
The Swiss players set their concert stage adjacent to the main entrance of the Weinstock Department of Emergency Medicine on the Fanya Gottesfeld Heller Floor- one of the most trafficked areas of the hospital. Dressed in their full traditional Swiss costumes, the players offered a welcoming distraction for all.
Many patients and staff came from around the hospital to see the unique performance, including large number of children from the Department of Pediatrics.
In addition to the alphorn presentation, the audience was treated to an impromptu show from the hospital’s troupe of medical clowns led by Dr. Sababa. Many in attendance welcomed the chance to view the alporn performance that introduced a new type of music, not typically associated with Israel.
