Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center has a reputation for excellence all over the city and even all over Israel, but following a recent conference, the hospital’s leading stance on medical care became known to an audience of neonatal physicians all the way in Havana, Cuba.
Dr. Ruben Bromiker, a senior neonatologist at Shaare Zedek’s Wilf Woman and Infant Center was invited to appear at the Union of Iberia-American College of Neonatology (SIBEN). Dr. Bromiker, who has lectured extensively all over the world, was selected to present at numerous sessions at the high level conference, including in the plenary session.
Dr. Bromiker was also honored to receive one of the few prizes awarded at the conference. He took home the award for best medical poster, winning from over 200 submitted candidates. His presentations focused on methods of resuscitation for neonates and the role of probiotics in neonatal care. The winning poster was dedicated to the use of specific pharmaceutical agents in combating streptococcus B in infants.
In accepting the award, which included a monetary prize, Dr. Bromiker chose to give his winnings back to the Cuban medical representatives in attendance who are facing severe financial constraints. He says that the experience served as a further indicator of the leading position Israeli medicine has come to play in the global arena.
Dr. Bromiker took advantage of the opportunity to be in Cuba and spent several days travelling the country. He says that one of the highlights of his time there was the chance to actually see the Cuban leader Fidel Castro alongside the Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez who were attending an event in the same conference center where the medical convention was being held.
