Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center has announced an official agreement with Yissum, the commercial development company associated with the Hebrew University. The agreement positions the company to serve as the official merchandising corporation for research developments achieved at Shaare Zedek. As a result of the partnership, Yissum will undertake to help develop and market research undertaken at Shaare Zedek for the benefit of relevant clients in Israel and around the world.
“This historic agreement will allow many of Shaare Zedek’s research studies, which number well over 300 each year, to target markets far beyond what we are currently able to reach,” said Dr. Dan Turner, Deputy Director General at Shaare Zedek for Research and Development. “This is a giant step forward for the hospital as it will help ensure that our scientific breakthroughs will be recognized not just locally but as a signal of the always expanding role Israel has to play in bio-tech development all over the globe.”
Shaare Zedek physicians have been credited with several innovative developments that have altered the face of clinical care including involvement with developing pharmaceutical advancements, medical devices and new modes of clinical care.
“Shaare Zedek has long been known as a center of compassionate medicine but in recent years we are increasingly known as a place of unique scientific advancement and research breakthroughs which is now being recognized through our working agreement with Yissum,” Dr. Turner says. “This partnership is a signal of how outside agencies appreciate what Shaare Zedek has to offer the broader medical community and how our hospital has literally entered a new era in our history.”
Shaare Zedek enjoys an academic partnership with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem whereby medical students study in the hospital and physicians from the hospital serve as lecturers in the University. According to Dr. Turner, despite the fact that many Shaare Zedek physicians are actively involved with research that can offer significant benefits to the medical community, the lack of a marketing partner meant that the research would rarely reach a wider audience. “We are confident that this agreement will change that and bring much deserved prestige to the hospital and its researchers,” he said.
