Obesity if one of the leading health issues in the western world. Morbid obesity is a disease with significant medical repercussions and early mortality. The Bariatric Surgery Unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Center was established with the understanding that the surgical solution is the best medical treatment for people who suffer from obesity of this magnitude.
Behavioral-environmental solutions, including diets and medication, were found to be insufficient in treating morbid obesity. The surgical procedures were proven effective for long-term weight loss as well as reduction in mortality and they significantly improve, and sometimes completely eliminate, the accompanying medical conditions. The benefits to the patient's quality of life are unparalleled. These procedures affect the body metabolically as well as mechanically. This is why in recent years this field of surgery is referred to as Metabolic Surgery.
The surgical solution became increasingly popular in recent years for two reasons - the recovery is quick and easy and the risk factor is very small. These stem from the strides made in the field of the minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgery. Using this technique, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen, as opposed to older methods that required a one big incision. Laparoscopy also contributed to the safety of the procedure and to a decrease in the accompanying risks, as did developments in the field of anesthesiology. Patients now recover quickly and resume their routine within just a few days.
We offer three types of procedures: the adjustable gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgery. All three procedures are covered by the health basket for suitable candidates. The decision regarding the type of surgery is based on each patient's specific needs, medical history and wishes.
We have a multi-disciplinary staff that includes an expert surgeon and a clinical dietician. In addition we enjoy the counsel of additional experts including psychologists, a psychiatrist, an endocrinologist, a cardiologist and a pulmonologist. Patients receive recommendations about personal and group support as part of their adjustment process.
In addition the unit offers support groups under the combined guidance of a dietitian and psychologist. On average, participants presented better results of short-term and long-term weight loss. For more details, please contact us via email.
We work closely with the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Institute (under the direction of Dr. Jacob Klein), that provides our patients fitness training with a personal trainer and a cardiologist's supervision.
Finally, patients can receive counseling about removal of excess skin and fat tissues at the clinic for body shaping after weight loss, part of collaboration with the Department for Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery.
The key to success is determination in the decision and perseverance in the lifestyle changes, which include a dietary regime, regular exercise, smoking cessation and medical monitoring.
