Cardiology Hospitalization Department

In the Hospitalization Unit of the Cardiology Department at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center, we make every effort to maintain a pleasant and open atmosphere for patients and their families, and to help them – as far as possible – lower the emotional stress caused by the hospitalization of their loved one with heart problems.

The Department
The Cardiology Department houses 35 beds, half of which are monitored by a stationary monitor or by telemetry.

The Patients
Department patients are hospitalized for a variety of cardiac conditions, including:
-    Post-infarction, directly from the ICU
-    Heart problems or suspected heart problems, referred by ER, such as chest pains, angina pectoris, heart failure and fibrillation, the most common of which is atrial fibrillation
-    Pre or post-evaluative or therapeutic catheterization
The average age of our patients is 67.

The Hospitalization
The average stay is 2-3 days.
Every day, 9 patients are discharged and 9 new patients are admitted into the department. However, in light of the department’s nature, another 5-6 elective patients are also admitted, in addition to the emergency cases. Meaning there are days upon which 10-15 new patients are admitted into the department.
The combination of a high turnover with the nature of the treated illnesses – some of which are very serious and demand intensive treatment – creates a very heavy workload for the medical and nursing team. To provide every patient with the professional care and warmth they need, the department is divided into two, with a senior doctor responsible for each section, as part of a rota system.
All the senior doctors participate in this rota.
