The Onco-Genetic Clinic at Shaare Zedek Medical Center counsels patients with cancer of various types - breast, ovarian, digestive etc. - and their family members to determine if there is a hereditary cancer syndrome in the family. A recommendation for genetic testing for different cancerous syndromes will be given based on the type of cancer, the age of the patient at the time of their diagnosis and the family background. Risk evaluations, follow-up recommendations and other recommendations for family members will also be given. In addition, the institute operates a multi-disciplinary Gastro-Genetic Clinic once a week.
When coming to the clinic, please bring with you all relevant medical information - documentation about other cancer occurrences in the family, pathological reports and results of previous genetic test, if such were done.
During the visit the counselor will review the patient's medical history, as well as previously performed tests, and create a family tree detailing the different instances of cancer in the family, their types and the ages of diagnosis.
We offer tests for common mutations in known genes, a full sequencing of known genes, different tests on tumor tissue such as microsatellite instability (MSI) and immunohistochemistry (IHC), etc.
If there is an indication that a genetic investigation is necessary, the results will be given during a second counseling session. During this session the patient will also receive a summation letter that includes a risk evaluation and other recommendations. Genetic results are not given over the phone or by mail, only during a personal counseling meeting.
