The Neurological Diagnosis Institute is part of Shaare Zedek Medical Center’s Neurological Department and conducts all necessary electrophysiological tests for patient diagnosis. These tests include:
Electroencephalogram (EEG) for evaluating brain activity. This test can help diagnose epilepsy and certain types of deterioration in cognitive ability. During the examination the patient lies awake for about half an hour connected to a monitor by electrodes. When it is difficult to document the disorder with the patient awake – and the disorder must be “coaxed out” (particularly in children) – we will conduct the test when patients are in a state of sleep deprivation. We ask them to come tired (after not sleeping for a determined amount of time) so they will fall asleep during the test. At any rate, patients should arrive for the examination after having eaten a meal. At the same time we can film the proceedings in order to match the electrical disorder to the relevant clinical solution.
Electromyogram and Nerve Conduction Tests are designed to evaluate the electrical functioning of the peripheral and muscular nerves. One can also diagnose peripheral neuropathy (damage to the peripheral nervous system), muscular diseases and diseases at the neuro-muscular junction (where the nerves connect to muscles).
Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) Tests examine conductivity and help diagnose problems in the optic nerve.
Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) Tests evaluate the functioning of the auditory channel in the brain stem. This test is used mainly for diagnosing brain stem functioning in coma situations and it is also one of the tests for determining brain death.
