Patients in the Geriatrics Department are treated at the Geriatric Rehabilitation Unit following neurological or orthopedic injuries, muscular or nerve diseases and hematological diseases. Treatment is designed to restore the patient to maximum functioning and independence of movement, eating, dressing and hygiene. A speech therapist joins the treatment team when treatment of swallowing, speech or communication is needed.
Treatment focuses on the elements of day to day functioning, including improving mobility, muscle tone, strength, stamina, movement planning and coordination. Depending on the patient’s needs, the team advises on accessories such as a bathroom rails, cooking aids, etc. The occupational therapist also matches wheelchairs and plans changes in accommodation based on the needs of the patient and his/her family.
