Shaare Zedek’s Hand Rehabilitation Unit comprises a skilled team of occupational therapists and physiotherapists specializing in treating injuries to the upper limbs. Treatment in the Unit focuses on restoring maximum functioning to the patient’s hand after injury or disease – after a traffic, work or domestic accident, degenerative disease, congenital defect or rehabilitative operations. The patients’ age range is varied.

The treatment process involves a personal interview, evaluation using standard diagnostic tools and determining the short and long-term aims of the treatment. The complexity of the findings usually present professional and daily challenges in building treatment programs and adapting treatment methods to the patient’s changing needs.

To determine an appropriate treatment program, the therapist must understand the structure of the hand and the disease process, as well as be familiar with any past surgical interventions and post-op treatment protocols. Treatment in the Hand Rehabilitation Unit is specifically adapted to each patient and relates to age, functioning level, the patient’s profession and his or her daily needs. Treatment includes the use of thermal media (paraffin, whirlpool baths, ultrasound), electricity, active and passive activation, adapting splints and accessories and different functioning exercises.
