The Pediatric Emergency Department – in its current format – was opened about seven years ago. Part of the Children's Wing, it is very warm, pleasant and spacious. The department treats patients referred from the health agencies, TEREM stations and health agency night centers, family doctors and pediatricians as well as children independently referred by their parents.
Department staff are trained to provide quality, efficient, fast and polite service. We are very aware that every baby and child should be in their natural environment, the home. A child is hospitalized only if he or she really needs specialist hospital treatment, i.e. care that cannot be given at home. After hospital treatment, we update the local doctor as to the child's situation and treatment so we can cooperate once the child is released from hospital.
The department treats a wide and varied population from Jerusalem and the surrounding area. We treat children from birth to 18 years old.
Similarly, we also see children suffering from chronic diseases in the fields of Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology and other areas under pediatric supervision.
Minor trauma cases can also find a caring ear in the department. More severe cases are first treated in the Trauma Room on Floor 2 and then sent to our department for monitoring.
In 2013, 22,000 children were referred to the department and the number is constantly on the rise.
The Pediatric Emergency Department is based on two main areas: external and internal.
The external support system includes:
• A special room for initial selection and evaluation (triage)
• Five 'fast track' doctor's examination rooms
• Waiting rooms
The internal "Warm Cycle" system includes:
• 12 cubicles designated for the more complex cases
• Two isolation rooms
• An inhalation treatment area
• A Shock and Trauma Room (accessible to ambulances in emergencies)
The department team includes senior and experienced pediatricians, pediatricians specializing in emergency medicine, pediatric interns, skilled nurses around the clock and ancillary staff. A senior doctor is always present until the early hours of the morning to make executive decisions about appropriate treatment, release or hospitalization.
