History of Nursing Administration

Shaare Zedek Medical Center was established in 1902 by Dr. Moshe Wallach, a central figure in the history of medicine during the period of settlement. Wallach founded and managed the hospital for 45 years (1902-1947). Since its opening with 20 beds on Jaffa Street, Shaare Zedek has played a significant role in the city's development.

Swester Zlma Mayer laid the foundation for the empathic nursing service, which to this day remains a prominent symbol of Shaare Zedek at all times. swester Zlma Mayer held the position of Head Nurse at the hospital since 1916, and for over fifty years, she exemplified love, dedication, and knowledge — qualities that shaped the character of nursing in Jerusalem in particular and in Israel as a whole. When she arrived in the Land of Israel, there was still a hospital without electricity and running water. With the help of her work and assistance, Shaare Zedek transformed into a modern and efficient hospital.

In 1936, she founded and managed the Nursing School and led it for over twenty years. Recognition of her service to the State of Israel was expressed by various individuals, including the late President Zalman Shazar, the late Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, Jerusalem's Mayor Teddy Kollek, the Chief Rabbis, and many friends around the world. In 1974, she was awarded the title "Beloved of Jerusalem."

In 1975, the magazine "Time" dubbed her the "Angel of the Holy Land." Zlma Mayer passed away on her 100th birthday, in the hospital she had served for the majority of her nearly eighty years of life. Her autobiography, "My Life at Shaare Zedek," depicts numerous anecdotes and significant moments from the many decades of her service as Head Nurse.
