Internship Program

You can choose between two tracks. The selected track cannot be changed after the start of the internship.

Rotating Internship:

- Three months in Internal Medicine - two consecutive months + an additional separate month

- Two consecutive months in General Surgery

- Two consecutive months in Pediatrics

- One month in Emergency Medicine

- Two months of elective rotations

- One month in Anesthesia and Intensive Care (Option to do a two-week elective in general intensive care or in one of the sub-specialties of intensive care in any hospital, according to the intern's choice).

- One month of vacation

Direct Specialty Internship:

Internal Medicine:

- Two months in General Surgery

- Two months in Pediatrics

- One month in Emergency Medicine

- Six months in Internal Medicine

- One month of vacation

Surgery:

- Three months in Internal Medicine

- One month in Pediatrics

- One month in Emergency Medicine

- Six months in General Surgery

- One month of vacation

Pediatrics:

- Three months in Internal Medicine

- One month in General Surgery

- One month in Emergency Medicine

- Six months in Pediatrics

- One month of vacation

It is mandatory to complete the six months of the direct specialty rotation in the second half of the internship year. The vacation month can be taken before the six months of the direct internship or after their completion, but not during them.

Internship Admission

The establishment of the internship program and the procedures for admission to work are carried out in coordination with Mrs. Ophira Lavsey, the Internship Coordinator. The program is determined in collaboration with and in consideration of the intern's preferences and the system's needs.

Change in the Start Date of the Internship

• Any medical student who has completed their studies, passed the final exams, and received authorization for the internship from the Ministry of Health is allowed to start the internship. Similarly, a medical graduate from abroad who has received a recognized diploma, successfully passed an examination prior to the internship, and has been authorized by the Ministry of Health is also allowed to start the internship.
• The internship year can commence at five different times throughout the year - January, March, May, July, and November. Any request for a change in the designated starting time should be coordinated with the Ministry and then formally submitted in writing to the Ministry of Health.

The internship lasts for 12 months, including a vacation month. An absence period of up to 30 days in total due to military service, illness, or childbirth will be considered part of the internship. Any absence beyond 30 days will require an extension of the internship, not covered by vacation time. A written request to extend the internship authorization should be submitted to the Ministry of Health.

The intern will be given the option to freely choose two elective months.

The elective months can be completed in the following ways:

1. In any recognized hospital in Israel for specialization.

2. In Health Maintenance Organizations (Family Medicine) for specialization.

3. In a university hospital abroad, subject to approval from the responsible party at the hospital and approval from the Ministry of Health.

Shifts can be conducted in the hospital where the elective takes place.

Coordinating the elective month outside the hospital is the responsibility of the intern. The intern should independently approach the department head where they intend to conduct the elective, obtain approval for this month, and inform us afterward. Once coordination is complete and approval is received, inform us so that we can send a letter to the hospital where the elective will take place, confirming that the rotation and stipend will be managed by us.

Intern Evaluation

Every month, department managers are provided with an evaluation form, where they are requested to provide feedback on the interns assigned to their department for that month. These evaluations are documented in the digital system of the Ministry of Health.

An intern who receives three evaluations as an Outstanding Intern (by different managers in mandatory departments) reports to the Ministry of Health as an Outstanding Intern and is eligible for a bonus.

Local graduates are required to have their internship booklet signed by the department head every month. (Foreign graduates do not have an internship booklet.)

Completion of the Internship

At the end of the internship, we report to the Ministry of Health about its progress, and the Chairperson of the Internship Committee confirms that the intern has completed the internship as required.

Local graduates are obligated to present their signed internship booklet to their university.
