The Blood Bank

The blood bank of Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem provides services to all hospital departments, including day hospitalization, maternity, and delivery, making it one of the largest departments in hospitals in the country. The laboratory offers services such as blood typing, matching, and supplying blood and its products 24 hours a day in routine and in emergencies (trauma, mass casualty events).

The blood bank operates with a rapid response while ensuring patient safety and preventing errors, providing courteous service to all departments. The blood bank is recognized with an ISO 9001 standard certification by the Institute of Standards.

There are numerous interfaces between the blood bank and the hospital's medical and nursing teams, aiming to provide the most tailored products for patients, all while ensuring maximum patient safety.

Blood and its products are valuable, essential, and vital resources for the daily treatment of thousands of patients, for performing surgeries, and transplants, and for saving the lives of victims of terror attacks, road accidents, and other traumatic incidents.

-Blood Type Determination of the Patient - Identifying the patient's blood type (A, B, AB, O) including the Rh factor.
-Antibody Screen Test in the patient's plasma - Identifying and characterizing clinical antibodies in cases of a positive antibody screen.
-Preparation of Blood Products for Transfusion - Cross-matching blood units tailored to the patient. In cases of a positive antibody screen and the presence of specific antibodies against certain antigens, negative units are selected for transfusion.
-Supply of Blood Products - The blood bank provides various blood products, such as plasma, platelets, cryoprecipitate, and special irradiated products, all tailored to the needs of the patient.
