Obstetric Anesthesiology Unit

About

The Obstetrics Anesthetization Unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Center serves all women coming to give birth at the hospital. An anesthetist is always present and accessible in the delivery rooms for any mother requesting an epidural anesthesia (regional anesthesia of the lower body). In addition, the unit’s doctors advise women with high-risk pregnancies and women keen on eliminating risks when taking painkillers during the birth.

A woman requesting an epidural during birth will be asked to sign an agreement and will then be connected to a machine that sprinkles the anesthetic substance into the epidural area. This process lasts approximately 15 minutes.
The Obstetrics Anesthetist also accompanies women who need an elective or emergency Cesarean Section.

Depending on the reasons for the operation and the woman’s medical state, the anesthetists will decide whether to connect her to epidural anesthesia or to give her a general anesthetic. At any rate, the anesthetist is in the operating room throughout the process.
