About
The cornea is the transparent front part of the eye. Its role, along with the lens of the eye, is to gather and focus the rays of light onto the retina. Any damage to the cornea can potentially interfere with the proper focusing of light onto the retina, leading to a decrease in visual acuity and even blindness. Even a minor scratch on the cornea can impact vision.
The cornea, which appears as a uniform translucent surface, is composed of five separate layers that are closely connected to each other. The outermost layer is called the epithelium, serving as a barrier to prevent foreign particles from entering the eye. The middle layer, or stroma, is made up of collagen fibers and proteins. The endothelial cells line the innermost part of the cornea and are responsible for draining fluids and maintaining the cornea's thin and transparent structure.
At our Cornea Clinic, we offer diagnostic and treatment services for corneal diseases and eye surface conditions. These include conditions such as blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids), dry eye, corneal infections, and conjunctival infections, as well as genetic, congenital, and acquired corneal disorders like keratoconus, pterygium, corneal ulcers, allergic inflammation, and more.
We have world-class equipment for corneal assessment and treatment, including devices for anterior and posterior corneal mapping, endothelial cell count measurement, OCT for corneal imaging, tear osmolarity measurement, collagen cross-linking, and OCT for real-time visualization of the cornea during corneal transplantation surgery (DSAEK, DMEK, DALK, PKP).
Some of the corneal issues treated within our unit include:
- Keratoconus
- Dry Eye Syndrome
- Corneal opacities after an eye infection
- Corneal Erosions
- Blepharitis: Inflammation of the eyelids and eyelashes
Feel free to ask any questions or schedule an appointment with our Cornea Clinic to receive top-quality care for your eye conditions.
