Neuro-ophthalmology Clinic

Neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty that combines neurology and ophthalmology (neuro = nerve, ophthalmology = eye medicine) and deals with the coordination of eye movements, visual interpretation, visual field, and eye motility. This field includes diseases of the optic nerve, visual pathways and brain interpretation, eye movements, disorders in eye alignment, and eyelid neurological disorders. Neuroophthalmology works closely in collaboration with other areas of ophthalmology, as well as with neurologists, neurosurgeons, and other related fields.

  1. Diagnosis and treatment of optic nerve diseases (infectious, inflammatory, autoimmune, compressive, etc.).
Optic neuritis in multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis in neuromyelitis optica (NMO), and other inflammatory conditions.
Ischemic problems (lack of oxygen, blood supply issues) of the optic nerve (anterior and posterior ischemic optic neuropathy).
Optic nerve tumors and visual pathways (Meningioma, glioma).

  2. Collaboration in monitoring patients with brain tumors and brain events (stroke or hemorrhage) affecting visual pathways, the optic nerve, and visual areas in the brain.

  3. Diagnosis and treatment of primary intracranial hypertension (Pseudotumor Cerebri).

  4. Diagnosis and treatment (in collaboration with other specialists) of thyroid ophthalmopathy.

  5. Diagnosis of eye movement and diplopia (double vision) problems.
    Paralytic or acquired nystagmus.

  6. Other eye movement disorders - due to neurological reasons or other diseases (stroke, inflammatory disease, or neuromuscular diseases like myasthenia gravis).
  7. Nystagmus.
  8. Diagnosis of eyelid problems.

  9. Light-Near dissociation (an issue with the pupils' reaction to light).

  10. Anisocoria (inequality in pupil size).

  11. Diagnosis of eyelid neurological disorders.

  12. Diagnosis and treatment of eyelid spasms and facial spasms (including
  13. Botulinum toxin - Botox - injections).

  14. Blepharospasm.

  15. Hemifacial spasm.

  16. Diagnosis of unexplained vision loss (including consultation with other ophthalmologists when the cause of vision loss is not apparent).

When is consultation with a neuro-ophthalmology specialist needed?

  1. Unexplained vision loss that cannot be diagnosed through regular eye examinations and ruled out for other causes, such as cataracts, retinal issues, increased intraocular pressure, and more. Additionally, the occurrence of diplopia (double vision) that may result from orbital diseases, neuromuscular diseases, neurological disorders, or brain tumors.
  2. Visual field disturbances that may result from any point along the visual pathway from the eye to the brain's interpreting centers.
  3. Changes in pupil size and problems with the pupils' reaction to light.
  4. Increased intracranial pressure resulting from brain tumors or cerebrospinal fluid leakage.
  5. Appearance of peculiar visual phenomena (visual shapes, colors, or hallucinations) that may be caused by migraines, brain tumors, or epilepsy.
  6. Symptoms of concern: blurred vision, narrowed visual field, double vision, involuntary movements around the face and eyes, especially after head trauma and relevant treatments. If any visual decline or changes occur, seeking consultation promptly is essential.

Diagnostic Process:

The neuroophthalmological diagnostic process includes a comprehensive eye examination, which is usually more extensive than regular eye examinations conducted by general ophthalmologists. It includes visual acuity testing, refraction (optics of the eye, performed in collaboration with optometrists), evaluation of the eye's structure, eye movements, phorias, accommodation, and convergence, as well as additional diagnostic tests like visual field testing, various imaging tests (such as OCT), and other specialized assessments. These additional tests aid in diagnosing neuro-ophthalmic conditions that may not always be evident in regular eye examinations.
