Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) Clinic

A unique clinic at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center for the treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH/CDH) in infants and children. We diagnose all types of hip dysplasia and provide comprehensive treatment for each case, focusing on prevention and early intervention (in newborns).

What is developmental dysplasia of the hip?

The main components of the hip joint are the femoral head (thigh bone) and the acetabulum of the pelvis. The edges of the acetabulum are covered by the labrum, a ring-shaped cartilage that protrudes and is known as the "Brum" (you may hear this term during an ultrasound). Both components are covered by hip synovial tissue, and the entire joint is enclosed in a capsule lined with synovial tissue.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip is a condition where the relationship between the acetabulum and the femoral head is not normal, leading to the development of abnormal tissues in and around the joint. It appears between week 12 of pregnancy and six months of age and can cause the child's hip to dislocate, subluxate, or suffer from hip dysplasia.

Who is the clinic intended for?

The clinic is primarily intended for newborns suspected of having a hip problem. Ultrasound examination of the hips can be performed, and treatment with braces can be initiated as needed. Parents of older children can discuss more complex solutions for cases where the condition was identified later or when early treatment was not successful.

In many cases, the hip joint may heal even without treatment, despite initial suspicions. Since treatment also carries risks, it is recommended to provide treatment only in cases where it is genuinely required. Therefore, infants with borderline findings will receive a recommendation to repeat the series of tests (examination by a pediatric orthopedist and hip ultrasound) at around 4 weeks of age.

Please bring two payment commitments from your health fund (or other insurance coverage): the first for the hip ultrasound examination (Health Ministry code L1028), and the second for the physician's examination with the option for clinic treatment (applying a brace or cast, examination by a pediatric orthopedist, etc. Health Ministry code L9249 or 99242).
