Ursodeoxycholic acid

Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), also known as ursodiol, is a substance produced and naturally excreted by the liver through bile. The acid assists the liver in eliminating other components of bile fluid. Ursodiol can be administered synthetically in cases where there is bile stagnation in the liver to enhance the flow of bile fluid. Treatment with ursodiol is generally associated with minimal side effects. In rare cases, the medication may cause some abdominal discomfort. In recent years, there has been a tendency to use lower doses to minimize significant side effects.
