Bronchoscopy

The test allows for the examination of the airways. During the test, the physician assesses both the upper and lower airways using a bronchoscope, a flexible device with an optical fiber at its tip that contains a video camera. The examination is conducted on both hospitalized and ambulatory patients. A specialized pediatric pulmonologist performs the procedure under sedation, with an anesthesiologist supervising.

The examination takes place in an endoscopy room located in the pediatric day hospital, equipped with child and infant-specific instruments. There is a waiting room tailored for children with activities and a trained nurse experienced in working with children. The procedure is performed based on the recommendation of a pediatric pulmonologist for the purpose of anatomical examination of the airways, as well as for collecting a sample of lung fluid, searching for foreign bodies, and occasionally for bronchoalveolar lavage.

After the procedure, the child stays in the day hospital for observation for about two hours and is then discharged home.
