Patients arrive at the geriatric center with acute illnesses (many are referred directly from ER triage); sometimes on mechanical ventilation. In addition, patients often present with functional disturbances, which may be accompanied by cognitive decline and various underlying medical conditions. Usually, patients return home after discharge. The center's team emphasizes maintaining ongoing communication with the patient's families and various stakeholders in the community during hospitalization. The center has monitoring units for up to 5 patients who require continuous nursing care during limited periods.
Along with acute care (total of 40 inpatient beds) and rehabilitation (9 inpatient beds), the Geriatric Center at Shaare Zedek Medical Center also includes a general geriatric outpatient clinic and a memory clinic.
