Diabetic Foot Clinic

A diabetic foot is an infection, ulcer, or deep tissue destruction in the lower limb of a person with diabetes. This is a common problem that severely affects the quality of life of diabetic patients and poses a significant obstacle to managing the disease. Diabetic foot wounds cause daily functional impairment, disability, and serious illness; in severe cases, they can lead to limb amputation, and in extreme cases, death.

Treatment for diabetic foot includes addressing infections, debridement, and surgery, along with guidance and advice for patients on how to prevent infections and complications from the disease. The treatment requires a team effort and a multidisciplinary approach. Therefore, the clinic's team works in cooperation with the Plastic Surgery Department, the Vascular Surgery Unit, and the Endocrinology and Metabolism Unit. Alongside the doctors, the team includes a nursing staff specializing in wound care, a social worker, a clinical dietitian, and a physical therapist.

Diabetes is a common chronic disease that places a heavy burden on the healthcare system. The incidence of diabetes in Israel and worldwide is on a consistent rise. In 2011, diabetes was the fourth leading cause of death in Israel, and 5.4% of all deaths (2,196 deaths) were attributed to the disease. 10% of the population has diabetes, and about 30% of them will develop a diabetic foot at some stage. It is estimated that about 50% of lower limb amputations are related to diabetes.
