They treat conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow or wrist, radial tunnel syndrome, and more.

The unit handles conditions such as trigger finger, tennis elbow (epicondylitis), De Quervain's tenosynovitis, and the removal of Dupuytren's contracture tissue to release contracted fingers. They also use various techniques to release chronic finger contractures.

This is done in cases of various congenital or acquired paralyses, such as cerebral palsy (CP), birth injuries, and various diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

The team corrects various deformities like club hand, Madelung deformity, and treats conditions involving missing fingers, extra fingers, syndactyly (fused fingers), and finger lengthening. They also perform bone length equalization and thumb creation in cases of absence.

In addition, a unit physician is part of a multidisciplinary clinic team that diagnoses abnormal ultrasound findings in a fetus. This team, led by senior gynecologists, meets with a hand surgeon when a suspected upper limb deformity is found during prenatal scans. This allows for a joint discussion of all findings. Once a decision is made regarding the management of the pregnancy and medical aspects after birth, the team meets with the couple to present their professional opinion on the available treatment options and the future prognosis.

The unit performs surgeries to remove both benign and malignant tumors from soft tissues and bones, and carries out bone grafts or covers defects with skin/soft tissue flaps.

They perform a variety of surgeries to rehabilitate conditions involving necrosis or non-union of wrist bones, such as Kienbock's disease (avascular necrosis of the lunate bone), scaphoid fracture non-union, and others. For these conditions, there are various treatments ranging from reconstructing and rehabilitating the damaged bones to more complex surgeries to save the rest of the joint if the local process is irreversible.

The team provides treatment for acute and chronic infections of the upper limb, with close monitoring in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

The unit uses advanced technologies, including:

• Surgical Planning with 3D Printing: This technology allows for the creation of a 3D model used during surgery, enabling maximum precision in reconstructing congenital and acquired deformities (post-fracture) based on the anatomy of the healthy limb.

• Surgical Microscope: The unit has an innovative microscope for use in microsurgical procedures, such as treating nerves and blood vessels.

• Ultrasound: This state-of-the-art device, exclusive to the Hand Unit, enables them to provide unique outpatient treatments. It is used for both diagnosis and treatment. The team injects various medications, such as cortisone and hyaluronic acid, under ultrasound guidance into deep areas for maximum accuracy and successful treatment (e.g., injections into the radial tunnel, small joints like CMC1 at the base of the thumb). The device is also used for diagnosis when a tumor, suspected foreign body, or inflammation is present.

• Arthroscopy: They perform arthroscopic treatments on the wrist and elbow to address various issues like inflammation, infections, and damage to deep structures such as cartilage and ligaments. They also perform dorsal ganglionectomies of the wrist using an arthroscopic approach, which significantly reduces scarring and leads to a better cosmetic outcome.

The Hand Surgery Unit integrates conservative and rehabilitative care for patients with complex fractures and nerve, tendon, or muscle injuries, both before and after surgery. The unit maintains contact with occupational therapy teams in the community and at the hospital as needed.
